The first fortified structure was not built on the island until the early 13 century as a defensive measure against the vikings.

The castle also played its part in the Jacobite risings in the 17 and 18 centuries

In 1719 the English sent three frigates who bombarded the castle for 3 days followed up by a landing and the blowing up of the castle. The castle lay in ruins for 200 years. Rebuilt and completed in 1932 to the original plans.
